Hello Femmes, with most of us having a lot of products that make up our beauty regimen or skincare routine, the thought of whether we are layering them up the right way is never far off. In addition to this, we also wonder what the waiting times between products should be.  Whether to use specific products in the morning or night even though there are certain products you should use twice daily, also, we wonder what products should only be used a few times weekly.

Ideally, skincare routines consist of products such as a cleanser, an exfoliating product, wash off masks, toner, essence, serum, sheet mask, eye cream, moisturizer, night pack, sunscreen and oils. With the potential of having some or all of these products in your routine, figuring out the right way to layer them can be a daunting task rather than refreshing.

Remember, if you’re all about basic skincare, then all you have to do is cleanse, exfoliate and mosturise. But if you’re one to go all out with your routine, this post might just be what you need to get things right.

Cleansers are products that you need to use twice daily. Cleansers, which can be water, gel or oil based help to remove build up of dirt and sebum, help keep your skin hydrated while also helping you maintain a clear skin.  Oil cleansers can be used only in the evenings as they help you break up sunscreen, makeup and sebum build up during the day. After oil cleansing, your water or gel cleanser can go in and do its job properly and removing other things such as sweat and dirt which your oil cleanser could not remove.

Exfoliating your skin should only be done one to three times every week as over exfoliating can be damaging. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and can help fade dark spots as well as help you maintain a bright and healthy skin. You can exfoliate your skin in two ways: either by using a product with physical particles that you scrub against your skin or by using a chemical product which you gently rub on your skin. Exfoliating your skin can be done either in the morning or at night time and right after you cleanse your face. You might find that doing it at night time works better as it will allow subsequent products work better while you enjoy your beauty sleep!

This should be your next step after exfoliating and should only be used when you physically exfoliate your skin as you do not want to be washing off your chemical exfoliating cream (on days you are not using your chemical exfoliating product, this would be great). Apply your wash off masks to a damp face and leave them on for 10 to 15 minutes before washing them off.

Toning your skin is absolutely necessary even though a lot of people tend to overlook this step. Toning helps to balance your skin’s PH level while also keeping it hydrated. It is recommended you do this twice daily, morning and night but I have also found that doing only at night time is just as effective.

This can also be used twice daily and it basically gives your skin an additional glow while also reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

You don’t need to wait to apply your serum after your essence. Can be used twice daily but usually works better at night time. Usually fortified with concentrated ingredients which target specific skincare issues, you want to gently rub it into your skin.

Sheet masks

Use your sheet masks once weekly (again, at night time is better). If you’re going to use a sheet masks, you might want to skip your serum as they usually already contain serums.

Bonus Tip: leave sheet masks on your skin five minutes less than recommended time as you don’t want it drying out on your skin. This can allow it to work in reverse.

Use eye creams twice daily as they help to reduce dark circles, puffiness and wrinkles.

Mosturisers are essential skincare products that should be used morning and night. They help your skin stay balanced and hydrated. If you have oily skin, do not be scared of using mosturisers as tney can change your skin for the better.

As the name suggests, these are masks you use at night. These masks are specific to what they do, for example, there are sheet masks that reduce hyper pigmentation, the appearance of large pores and so on. Night masks basically add an extra layer of protection to your skincare routine.

This is another essential skincare routine. With a sunscreen, you shield your skin from harmful UV rays which can cause severe damaging effects such as sun burns, hyper pigmentation and premature aging. It is best used after a mosturiser and can be used as many times as possible during the day depending on its SPF.

Can be used twice daily but if you don’t like the sticky feeling it gives, you can use it at night time only. It is recommended that you use them after your mosturiser and not in place of a mosturiser. I know a lot of people especially my oily femmes, would think twice about this step but oils can help balance sebum production while supplying your skin with healthy benefits.
